E-mail Discussions With A Band Manager

Hi (Cool band manager I respect),

So the ice cream parlor where we shot the music video is getting a write-up in the Chronicle, and the owner wants a link to the music video (he’s going to mention how a local indie band supported the indie ice cream parlor). Pretty cool I think. Is it OK if I give them my vimeo link to the music video? Might be good exposure for the band. I’ll make sure to have a link to the band’s EP and Myspace in the description section of the music video. Please let me know if there are any other links you would like me to add to the description section.
Right now my vimeo link to the music video is set on private, but if it’s OK to promote the link in the newspaper, I will make it public.
Please let me know if it’s Ok to share the link with the San Francisco Chronicle. They want to know by the 17th. The article will run on the 22nd (Sunday), which is a great day for paper reading.
Hope all is well.

Gairo what is the nature of the story on the ice cream parlor, is it online or print?

If you’d like to send a current version of the video I’m happy to take a look at it again for consideration but as it stands currently we’ve decided to move forward with out using it for the bands media.

While I appreciate that you took the time to do this I was unfortunately left out of the story boarding and more importantly casting for the video.  Many of the issues I had with the video could have potentially been avoided if we had dialogue preceding it’s production.  I need to make sure that this is the right decision for the band before I can authorize it’s use in any way.

respectfully,

Dear (band manager who is kind of losing his coolness),

The story of the ice cream parlor deals with the history of its importance to San Francisco, and their recent move to a bigger location.  The music video will briefly be mentioned since the story does not revolve around the band or the music video. The writer just wants to use the music video URL to promote the parlor, and how the owner of the Ice Cream incorporates himself with the community. The story will be printed in the Chronicle on the 22nd.

I am deeply sorry you were never part of the pre-production process. The band and I had several discussions dealing with every aspect of the video, and I was under the impression they were in communication with you throughout the process. When I saw you during production for the ice cream parlor scenes, I thought you were well informed (which apparently wasn’t the case). This being my second music video, I was still unaware of the proper procedure. I’ve learned since then to make sure everyone in the band and outside of the band know exactly what’s going on.  I hope that if we have future collaboration, I will certainly work with you in every aspect of the creative process.

As for the music video, in this day in age it’s not enough for me to simply put it on my website. For me to expand as a director, I have to put it on video forums (such as Vimeo) where potential clients can see comments left by viewers. This music video is not just about the band, but also about me as a visual storyteller.  I understand if you do not want to use the music video for the band’s media; however, I am urging you to let me use it on my profile pages so that I may promote myself.

Hope you are doing well.

Gairo.  With all due respect we’ve decided to not use this video and request that it remain private.
There are some issues with it that I’m not sure can be overcome with out recasting and some serious edits at this point.
You choose to produce something with out going through proper channels so there should be no presumtion on your behalf that it would be gaurenteed release.
Respectfully,

1) Sorry you didn’t take an interest in what the band you manage was doing during the 4 month period of pre-prodcution.
2) I apologize for not including you even though I thought you were talking to your band about the music video during meetings.
3) You were on set for one of the shooting days.
4) Learn how to spell.
5)Respectfully.
